long post....just installed new front dash speakers... Posted by mlc [Email] (#1747) [Profile/Gallery] (more from mlc) on Sat, 4 Oct 2003 23:34:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well I finally got around to replacing the front dash speakers in my 2001 9-5lpt (AS3 system) with the Infinity Kappa 32.5 CF's as many have recommended on this board..
The sound improvement, in my opinion, is definitely worth it, I thought the factory speakers did an o.k. job with imaging and always seemed to reproduce the music without coloring the sound, but they always seemed to have this sloppy/loose bass sound up front, and would sound strained at times, especially at moderate and higher volume levels.
As soon compare the two speakers side by side, it's obvious you're going to be rewarded, as the factories are much smaller in size and mass. The quality of the cone, tweeter, etc. is a substantial improvement over the originals.
The Infinity's have a noticably cleaner/tighter sound, and are less harsh, especially in the upper midrange. Listening to "classic rock", the results vary, really depending on the quality of the source material being played. Jazz however, is much more rewarding.. as the clarity of horns and acoustic bass is much more dramatic.
The installation is not a straight drop-in, as previously stated, so be sure you're patient and read the other posts on this board prior to upgrading. These key phases to a successful install have been mentioned by others, and are as follows:
1) need to remove the spacer rings as others stated. These are glued on, but come off easily if you apply a little pressure.
2) Know you wire color codes !! see the previous posts on this topic
3) wrap the external crossover's with some type foam/padding or place them on a piece of insulation so they don't rattle around when you drop them into the speaker hole locations.
4) Use washers under the screws so you get a good tight mount.. otherwise the grill will not fit. The grills don't fit perfectly as they did with the factory speakers.. the passenger side grill is slightly raised along the back edge. but it's not at all noticeable. Note.. if you're worried about this.. then you may want to consider using the Boston Acoustic 3.5" replacements (CX3's ?)
5) secure/tie the wire from the crossovers.. I didn't.. and I can hear a slight buzz on rare occassion from the wires being free.. I need to go back in and tape or wire wrap these up ... not a big deal
Special thanks to Dean, and a couple of the others, whose prior posts on this topic proved priceless. They definitely saved me a few hours of frustration had I gone into this without any prior knowledge...
thanks guys !
