My wife's Volvo wagon needed struts and shocks, and I got about the same price quote from the Volvo dealer. I just laughed. Instead, I bought the strut inserts and shocks from NAPA (they're called SensaTrac (built by Monroe in Belgium)) and my bill was around $200 total. But I got a $50 rebate check back!
Putting in the shocks is a cinch. Really very easy. The strut inserts are not. It took me about 5 hours to do the first one, then another two to do the second. You need a spring compressor. But really, it was more my patient and plodding attitude doing it that made it take so long. If I were a trained mechanic, I doubt if it would take me more than an hour per strut.
Dealers give prices to people and expect them to know so little about cars that they say "uhhh... I guess that's what it costs... okay". And like someone else said, they give out loaner cars and have health benefits and rent to pay. I can't say it would be worth it to me to spend $1100... my threshold for avoiding the pain of a day wrestling with struts would be more like $400.
