Let me first start off by saying that I am not the norm for car buying. I average a new car say every 1.5 years. I also ideally like to have 3 -- one for fun, a 4-door sedan, and a large family car (wagon or SUV).
I sold my 2000 blue viggen coupe to buy a boat. Nice boat, but that wore off after 2 years. During that time I traded the family wagon (Audi allroad) and bought the 2002 aero. After I sold the boat early this year I decided to get the Viggen as a 3rd car for fun. I was going to get a higher mileage one with which I could add some fun mods. Long story short I ended up with a lower mileage CPO Viggen and decided that it could be my daily driver and I could save a few dollars and sell the aero (had it over a year now). I sold the aero for a decent price given the usual depreciation curve so thats what I did.
So I guess I hadn't intended to sell the aero. Its a very nice car and I would buy one again if I needed a sedan or wagon. I definitely went for the 02 or better model as handling was much improved. Back when I bought the Viggen I also drove the 2000 aero, but the Viggen was the winner. When I bought the 2002 aero I also almost bought a 2002 5-door Viggen, but bang for the buck the 02 aero was better in many ways. I think the changes in 02 are worth the extra dollars for a newer aero.
At any rate the 00-01 aero seats are standard 9-5 seats -- the aero did not get Viggen like seats until 02 (another reason I felt good about the 02 aero vs an 02 Viggen). The stock stereo in the aero is far superior to the Viggen so I do miss that now.
Its really tough. At the end of the day I like the quickness of the Viggen and its untamed nature is just more fun to drive IMO. I also like the hatch and the looks of the 9-3 better. I would also price a Viggen 5-door CPO -- if you really like your Viggen this may be the way to go -- and if you added the steering rack clamp or other mods you could swap them to the new Viggen. Just a thought.
Overall you really can't go wrong. Its all just preference. My goal now is to save some money as I drive the Viggen and move the Viggen back to garage queen status and who knows what I will get for a sedan -- the new 5 series or maybe a used Audi S6 wagon might be in order sometime next year. I also want to see what Saab offers in terms of the final 9-5 version maybe in 2005 -- I have got to believe they will build a 275 HP one in its last year just to keep sales moving. We shall see....
