It is a pretty easy fix to do yourself. But I've done it many times on many cars, so my opinion is biased.
You need to:
- drain the coolant
- loosen the top radiator hose clamp at the thermostat housing and remove the top radiator hose from the housing... some coolant might come out...
- remove the two bolts that hold the housing to the engine and remove the housing noting if there is a gasket.
- pull out the old thermostat
- then clean everything meticulously. Scrap off the old gasket with a putty knife. Then use a soft wire brush on the end of a cordless drill to get all the cruft out of the nooks and crannies. Stuff a clean cloth into the hole where the thermostat had been so that no gunk gets into the engine.
- put in the new thermostat
- coat the gasket, place it onto the thermostat housing, then bolt the housing back on
NOTE: some thermostats have a rubber o-ring to seal them... I can't remember if the 9-5 has that as well. Just make sure to assemble the thermostat, gasket (or O-ring), and housing in the same order it was removed.
- reattach the hose
- refill the coolant
It isn't very hard, and you'll have some fun. Takes about 1/3rd of a six-pack to get done (one before you start, one when you're done and looking for leaks).
