I've got a 2000 9-5 wagon (2.3, manual), bought used a few months ago. I've never regretted having a wagon instead of a sedan. With two kids it's great having that whomping big box behind the back seat. Easy to reach stuff from the passenger compartment. A load of furniture that friends predicted would take 2 or 3 trips to carry home fit neatly in one go. Cram a kid or two back there on quick, crowded ice cream runs in the summer and the wagon holds 7. 300-mile trips to country house with all kinds of extra junk (kids' bike; floor lamp) are painless, as is packing.
Drove my parents, my aunt and my 2-year-old daughter from NYC to Virginia and was glad to have room for all the luggage plus the ability to reach into the back for snacks, books for the kid, etc.
As for performance, I haven't once wished I had a smaller car. Found the wagon to be very solid and reassuring on snow.
With one child I can picture getting by with sedan. Not with two.
(Also think 9-5 wagon better looking than sedan.)
