My 2000 AERO auto sedan is getting between 19 and 20 mpg right now, but lately all I've been doing is city driving. (less than 20 min trips, stoplights the entire way). When I drive in the summer, I'm using Continental ContiTouring Contact tires and it's more of a highway mix so I get 22-23 mpg. When resetting the SID on the freeway (70mph), it gets 30 mpg.
My 99 lpt auto sedan was 2mpg better than all of those numbers.
Yes, using the A/C uses more gas, but since the 9-5 is so aerodynamic (0.29 coefficient of drag) opening the windows at highway speeds creates so much extra drag, that it uses more gas than keeping them closed and using the A/C.
City driving is a little different. Opening the windows at low speeds doesn't create much drag, so it probably uses less gas to not have the A/C on in the city.
There have been many reports the past couple of years saying that since cars are so aerodynamic now, it is more efficient to keep the windows closed and use the A/C.
That being said, in the 9-5 I have not noticed a change in mpg between using the A/C and not using it. Also, when driving in summer with the A/C on, my 9-5 feels just as powerful as when the A/C is off. Whereas in my old 9000's there was a noticabe drop in power available to accelerate.
