The advantage of ONstar over cellphone service is that it operates on the old analog network, which is still being supported (but not for very much longer).
If you live in or travel to and area without digital cellular coverage, your cellphone will not work, and you are SOL.
I was visiting a friend in Billings, MT and had my usually trusty Nokia 3360 (analog/digital), which had no coverage outside the city when we drove south to Cody, WY. My alphanumeric pager was worthless too. I now have a GSM cellphone (Sony Ericsson T616), and for the most part I have had coverage wherever I go, but if you're not in a GSM cell, your phone is useless. I carry my Nokia 3360 in my briefcase in case I that happens (you can still call 911 on a discontinued old phone).0
I suspect that Onstar (on its 3watt signal versus 0.6watt for handhelds) would provide a wider coverage area as it relates to signal strength.
So, if you travel to or live in the Styx and get stuck or whatever, Onstar will more likely bail you out more more often than not compared to your cellphone.
