Who says understeer is bad, particularly for a street vehicle? Understeer is a safety mechanism, present in almost all passenger vehicles, especially front-drivers. Better to plow into a ditch than to spin out of control and end up who knows where (or upside down like Explorers). If you need convincing, just take a corner in your 95 a little beyond it's limits, and then try the same thing in an older 911. Just give yourself plenty of room!
Actually this is an interesting topic. Regardless of the understeer/oversteer debate, what's clear is that the Explorer has a tendancy to flip over when a tire blows. Ford will never admit this, as it could be the death knell of their lucrative SUV market. They make claims that it is no more unstable than other SUVs in its class - to me that means that all the others in its class are unstable too. You'll never catch them comparing stability or rollover tendancy to sedans or even minivans - no way!
Anything to stem the tide of SUVs taking over our roads here in the U.S., polluting our air and endangering the rest of us - good for Firestone!
