Saab has taken the current 4 cylinder 9-5 motor as far as they're going to. There's a more power to be had through aftermarket sources, but Saab believes they wouldn't meet their internal reliability standards (i.e., autobahn style full out motoring, stopping only for fuel and oil changes.) Of course, one "aftermarket" source, Hirsch, sort of has the Saab stamp of approval, so maybe that will be a dealer option. Other than that, power boosts will come from either more cylinders or a more efficient engine. The 2.0 9-3SS could produce a claimed 250 hp with direct injection spark ignition, and there's 2.4L versions of the engine coming. Even if they destroke the 2.4 motor same as they did for the 2.0, that would give a 2.2 motor. Plus there's variable cam phasing optional on the 9-3SS motor (slated for use in the 2.4L version going into the Pontiac Solstice, et al). Note that the new 2.0 motor's power and torque exceed those of the motor it replaces while generating .2 bar less boost. This extra power comes from greater efficiency in the engine, I think, thanks to roller tappets, aerodynamic crank counterweights, and a more efficient water pump.
