I have a 2000 LPT with 11,000 miles on it. Turbo was replaced at approx. 10,000 miles. I first noticed the smoke while starting my car in the garage. I was looking in the driver's side mirror preparing to back up and noticed a puff of greyish smoke for a second. I watched start ups for the next week or so, and sometimes I saw nothing, sometimes a smallish puff of smoke that would usually dissipate within 1-2 seconds. The worst I ever saw was 2.3 seconds of smoke, with the cloud maybe reaching the top of the trunk. Check for smoke on cold start up, as that's when it's most likely to happen. There was no noticeable performance decrease.
My dealer tried to tell me that it was poor gas, or that it might be carbon buildup in the engine that was getting blown out during start up. After attempting to clean out any deposits in the engine and not remedying the problem, they finally installed a new turbo. If you have to take your car in for this, be prepared to be without it for a while. It took my dealer 1 week to go through the whole process, in large part because they would have to let the car sit overnight to see if they got any smoke at startup.
