Synthetic media filters.... There in fact are synthetic media filters, on the USA market at least. The best known are the Mobil 1 oil filter and the AC/Delco Ultraguard Gold oil filter. See the links below.

The price for these synthetic media filters is typically 3 times that of a regular paper media filter ($9-11 USD vs. $2-4 USD).
The advertising really pushed to better filtering aspects of synthetic media rather than the longer life. This is due mainly to the American culture of frequent oil changes and the low cunsumer price of oil in the USA (typically $2 USD/quart for most regular brands of oil and $5 USD/quart for synthetic oils like Mobil 1).
There are several published tests, as well oil analysis tests by Saabnet readers, that show synthetic oil and synthetic media filters can be used for at least 10,000 miles with no adverse changes in the oil quality. But given the inexpensive consumer costs (less than $50 USD) for an oil change in the USA market, it is difficult to not just make 5,000 mile oil changes and not worry about it.
