I drove a '92 9KT for 130,000 miles and have owned an '01 and an '03 9-5 Aero Wagon. All 5 speed manuals. I too thought the 9KT was faster when I test drove a 9-5 at the dealers. I was very disappointed. However, after owning a 9-5 Aero for awhile, I have found that not to be true. The 9-5 Aero is one fast car. Several things to consider:
1) It takes almost 10k miles for an Aero engine to loosen up. The car is slower new than after it has aged.
2) The dealer car probably does not have the same gas in it that you run.
3) The engine management system has not yet adapted to your driving. In fact, it has probably adapted to sitting in the lot and idling for long periods of time. You need to drive the car for an hour or so for it to adapt to your driving style.
4) The '92 is geared lower than the '04, therefore it feels to be a little quicker off the line, but I'll tell you, when you drop it down to 4th at 70 or to 3rd at 50, the '04 will pull your teeth out.
