As far as safety goes..both are unquestionably at the top of the pack.. and there is really no clear winner here, though I'm sure fans of each side would have you believe otherwise...
In terms of reliability.. that's a close call as well... Both models seemed to have suffered their share of problems when introducing major design changes in the past..otherwise they seem to be fairly stable.. I didn't think the 2002 SAAB had any major changes, so you should be o.k. on that front... For what its worth, publications such as Consumer Reports have given the 9-5 some good ratings/reviews lately...
Either way you go .. you'd better start stocking up on those light bulbs as both cars do like to burn them up !!
If you're going to lease .. the SAAB seems to be the car of choice...
The SAAB seems to be a more "fun" car to drive by most accounts... and I think its styling is more attractive ...though the recent wagon entries from Volvo are much more attractive than past entries...
