Ian, good idea, trying to find patterns. Saab should be doing this... but I suspect they're not (at least they did not ask *me* these questions).

I've had three failures, one on my old '99, and 2 on my newer '01 Aero. I have the car serviced regularly. Usually drive 20 mile trips (to/from work) and some short hops around town.

First failure ('99 9-5) actually happened to my son-in-law who had borrowed car. Made a dandy impression - he was considering a Saab but now laughs at the idea.

Second failure ('01 Aero), last July, was a hot summer night. Clear weather, up around 90, doing highway driving - four adults in the car. No warning, lost all power (in high speed lane, just barely made it onto breakdown lane where we drove over broken glass, so needed to fix flat tire). Car did restart after 10 minutes, dealer replaced DI next day.

Second failure was this week here in Boston. Cool evening, had driven no more than a mile in the midst of fairly severe thunderstorm, so it was raining pretty hard. No warning, just total failure. Could not restart, eventually had it towed.

Both replacements were covered under warranty. I now keep a spare - but that doesn't make the adventure of losing power while on the road/highway any less terrifying.

We're looking for a dog-carrying car for my wife. She won't even consider a Saab after these, and wonders why I keep this one. I love it, but I do worry a bit more than I'd like to.
