Delay of power with A/C on?

I'm driving a '00 9-5 wagon with the base 2.3t, automatic. We recently had very warm ambient temperatures (30+ oC) and high humidity that prompted me to use the air conditioning.
I was shocked when I pressed the accelerator and had no power (minimal acceleration) for about 2-3 seconds (which felt like forever). Then the power would come on and the car would accelerate briskly.
I did not notice a difference with the transmission in Sport mode but did sence a bit of an improvement when the transmission was in 3rd instead of O/D.
Turning the A/C off restored the car to it's usual response time.
Turbo lag is one thing, but this just felt way too extreme to be just turbo lag. Do these engines have intercoolers for the charge air? I'm guessing not as I don't recall reading about one anywhere in the literature.
Has anyone else noticed this significant delay in power with the A/C on?
Any suggestions? I was thinking of going down to the dealer when we have this type of climate and test driving another car with the A/C on to see if it responds the same.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
