When you're in third (or fourth) gear, and when the speed has stabilized (i.e. when you ease the accel. pedal a little after the acceleration) the gearbox activates direct lock-up, bypassing the hydraulic torque converter (which is known to cause those autobox characteristics people do not like - loss of power, lesser fuel economy due to higher revs). Due to this feature 4-speed-autobox-equipped Saabs rev the engine to 2050 rpm @ 65 mph - better than Audi's 5-speed overdrive-autobox. Plus there is slightly better margin of necessity to downshift for moderate acceleration.
