We have a '97 900 SET--when we were getting it ( used ) i tried to get my wife to look at the new saturn l300. The saturn would have been a bit more expensive, but they eventually offered special financing which would have easily eaten up the difference.
Of course, the saturn is missing some key things, like ACC, the awesome hatch, and the turbo rush. On the other hand, the saturn service & repair is much more economical, it's actually a bit better on gas, no turbo lag on the v6, and the saturn's ride is smoother. The saturn also had traction control which our 900 does not, and it's a nice thing to have for my wife who goes skiing.
I did have a saturn sl2. It reached almost 100,000 mles with virtually no maintainence, very economical, and i sold it near 100,000 for over 1/3 what i paid for it, and it was a bit beat up. BUT it was REALLY rattly, loud, harsh, etc.
The saturn L300 does give one a sense of deja vu vis a vis the saab--the similar floorplan is noticable, and some of the internal components are the same.
All in all, i'm glad we got the saab for reason like safety and it's fun-to-drive factor, and it's extra comfort and anemities. But if we get a few more unreasonably expensive repairs, we may feel differently. ;)
As an aside, the saabs will be using the saturn's 2.2L engine soon, turboed, of course.
