My 02 Areo has been plagued with that awful and disconcerting 'tick' since I bought it 6 weeks (5K miles) ago! The 'tick/rattle' sensation was evident in 1st, 2nd and third gears, either when starting off from a stand still or stopping or turning. It was so bad that I could also feel it in the clutch pedal. I was beginning to think that there was something seriously wrong with the drive train!!!

BUT, for the sake of 10 pence (18 cents) of spray grease and 10 minutes IT’S All GONE!! The car is now so smooth and no more tick. Its a completely different beasty.

I just sprayed high density grease down the splined joint at the lower end of the middle section of the steering column whilst pushing out the free play. No need to remove anything, perfectly accessible from the foot well.

I am now a very happy Saaber!
