white smoke is rich mixture at startup. For the last 30,000 miles my car has been puffing white smoke at start. I have complained about this three or four times to the dealer and everytime I got the same answer: this is normal. Also an indie I use said the same thing and that they here the complaint often about the 9-5s.
Now blue smoke it different, that is the turbo. Mine _just_ began doing this a few weeks ago, just after getting a new DI and the cat replaced.
Don't feel bad about your car. These things are suppose to be excellent machines and very safe, but have some issues here and there.
My car has had SID replaced, 1 DI replaced, vacuum leaks, catalytic converter replaced, mass airflow sensor replaced, onstar malfunctions, vehicle smoking at start up, inoperable horn-twice, oil leaks, left & right wheel bearings replaced, tons of rattles, trunk lid gas shocks replaced-twice, dead battery, window switchpack replaced, no air through rear vents-twice, blinker switch clip replaced, bypass valve replaced, spark plugs replaced outside normal interval, cupholder issues, sway bar bushings replaced, map light replaced, front grille replaced (chrome bubbled), clunky auto tranny when going from park to reverse, CD player skipping issues-finally replaced, numerous bulbs throughout vehicle. All this was done between 20,000-52,000 miles.
Somehow, I manage to still like this car. Just took it on a 980 mile round trip to Amarillo, TX from Denver, CO and the car was a blast and made the drive seem effortless. Just wish it hadn't been in the shop 14 times in 27 months.
