Trouble reversing in automatic

I was trying to pull out of my garage this morning in my 04 wagon and when I put it in reverse and stepped on the gas it felt like the parking brake was on. I raised and lowered the brake to confirm that it was off, but it still felt like there was a ton of resistance when I tried to reverse. I put it into drive, rolled forward a foot or two, then reversed out with no problem. I looked under the car to make sure there wasn't anything blocking any of the wheels. I'm confounded. Any ideas what this might be? I'm tempted to say it was just "user error," and that I just didn't have the shifter securely in reverse, but that's not what it felt like.
