I am not positive about Saab, but I do know that GM pays the service shops (and the mechanics) less for warranty work. A job that is priced at 1.5 hours customer pay might only be 1.2 hours warranty. (That's how the mechanic gets screwed) The dealer gets screwed because GM does not pay the same hourly rate for warranty work that the dealer charges for customer pay work. A quick example. customer pay job is 1.5 hours labor @ $65/hour. warranty for the same job is 1.2 hours @ $40/hour. I also know that Ford has a very similar policy. I assume but do not know for a fact that Saab has the same policy.

Your car should be covered under warranty. As everyone already stated the service interval is 10,000 miles for that vehicle so you should have sufficient # of receipts. If they claim the car should have been serviced on the "severe use" schedule ask them to prove that is true. Sice you spoke with the original owner he could say that the car was not driven according to the severe use schedule.

The "black oil" story doesn't hold much weight with me either. I don't think the tech can tell by visual inspection if the oil was ever changed or not. Not beyond a reasonable doubt at least...

They are simply F*cking with you. Don't take it. I would go to another dealer or call Saab USA. (1-800-saab-usa I think) Be polite. Tell the truth. Mention that you have record of at least three oil changes on the vehicle which complies with the advised service procedures in the manual to maintain your warranty. Don't even consider paying for this work...
