I thought I would not have to get a DI right away, I was Wrong. The DI on my wife's '99 9-5, with only 36,000 miles fried. It only happened two houses away from our house, that was the good part. When she called me at work and stated the smoke was coming from the valve cover, right away I knew it was the DI. When I got home that night, I could smell the fried PC board and I was five feet away from the car. What blew me away was SAAB wanted $430 for a new DI and there was a $200 core charge. I found a DI for $395 in my area, so the car was only down for a day, but if I would have ordered up one earlier from eEuropart, I would have only paid $300 and no core charge for the DI and the car would not have been down for a day. My wife could not be without a car for another day, that is why I did not go mail order at that time. So, yes I am going to get a spair and it will sit in the garage (except when we take the car for long trips, then it will be in the back of the 9-5).
And the reason the DI's are going bad is Heat. Most of the IC's produced in the electronic industry are of a lower quality compaired to parts made over 20 years ago (Most are made in third world countries; Asia, Mexico, etc., because it is cheaper to produce over there so the profits are higher) and they can not take the heat (probably over 200 degrees F). Why do you think Computer labs, Server rooms are always under 70 degrees F. They would not be wasting money on airconditioning if they did not have to do it. If SAAB/GM would just remove the electronics from the Unit and just leave the coils and the knock sensor, and reconfigure the computer, it would work great (like the way they have it for their Corvette and the discontinued Camaro, they both have coils that are almost dirrectly mount to each spark plug).
Ok, I'm done venting about that piece of junk SAAB DI and sorry for rambling...Vic
