the puff of smoke you mention seems to be a common sympton for those who've had turbo related problems, based on what I've read on this forum.. usually the turbo seal/gasket is leaking, which would explain what you're describing...
secondly.. the weather is definitely a factor as well...as a turbo does tend to be less efficient on a hot humid day, so keep that in mind as well. Also if its hot out.. chances are you've got the AUTO climate going constantly.. meaning the AC compressor is going.. which also hurts performace.
as far as the octane thing...I have the same car and have not noticed any substantial difference using the different octanes. There are differences, but they are subtle... and wouldn't account for the problem you've described...
I would definitely take the car back to the dealer and have him check on that smoke you've mentioned...
