Do handheld GPS on the dash work OK?

I'd like to use a GPS-based system for warning of fixed speed cameras, but the 12-channel GPS receiver built into the unit doesn't have an external aerial. I know some windsheilds don't transmit GPS signals because of a metal coating on the inner surface (I think).
Has anyone used a hand-held GPS unit on their 9-5 dash without having to resort to a remotely positioned external antenna? Was the reception solid?
Thanks in advance.
