That sounds about right to me. I can hear the whine at idle and lower vehicle speeds, but it is not too bad. Previous to the instillation of the filter the whine I had was loud enough that I could not use Onstar.
Anther thing that I would advise you check out is if the Onstar rep can hear you OK. (If you are using the Nokia mic you should be fine, but if you are using the Saab mic for Onstar and the handsfree system you may have an issue) The Onstar people could not hear me very well when I was using the Saab mic for both applications. I went to the Nokia mic and it has solved most problems. I installed it at the upper center of the windshield just to the driver's side. (On the area painted black) The wiring is all behind the headliner and it is a fairly stealthy install.
As far as available space, if your SE has a six cylinder engine, it may be a tighter package than my Aero. I have never been under a six cylinder saab. (as far as special tools, I used to own a repair/custimization shop so I have accumulated more than my share over the years...)
