It wasn't so long ago that you weren't supposed to even use full synthetic during break in fearing the car wouldn't break in at all with the slippery stuff. Be as anal as you want about break-in, but do consider what excessive oil changes do to the the environment.
As for operating during break-in, I've never in all my years in the car biz hand anyone with a break-in issue. I have had a few old ladies in Saturns who had excessive oil consumption because they never broke the engine in enough. I have experienced cars that were thrashed from the get go and they were definitely faster than average.
Normal American driving just doesn't allow for much more than an ocasional spurt, unlike European driving where you can test a cars top speed at high revs and high load.
