I note that on the new Folksam webcite for 2001 both 900/9-3 and 9000 Saabs have been downgraded from 50% safer than average last year to 40% safer than average this year. I think what this means is that the bar has been raised by newer model cars making it much more difficult to be safer than average. Only one car was 50% safer than average this year (compared to five last year) and that was the Volvo 70 series. The 9-5 has not been rated yet. Audis fell quite a bit -- the A4 and A6(pre 98 model) and 100 were all rated at 20% better than average. The BMWs scored average for both 3 and 5 series. The Mercedes 200/300 was 20% above average. The real surprise -- the Ford Focus at 40% above average.
Folksam had one other interesting conclusion -- that crash testing predicts serious injury and death fairly well but non serious injury very poorly.
