Leasing last year's model might not make sense

I'm not an expert on this, but it might make more sense to lease a new car than the prior year's model. This is because lease payments are, in part, related to the projected residual value of the car. For example, if you enter into a 3-year lease on a 2004 model now, in December, 2007, (when 2008's are available) your car will be 4-model years old, instead of three. As explained to me, the residual value of a 2005 will be higher than a 2004, when the lease is up at the end of 2007.
Here's my recent experience. I went to a dealer at the end of November. They had one 2004 9-5 left (a Linear wagon), and I was willing to lease it. The dealer said that Saab had no active programs for leasing that vehicle, and with its reduced projected residual value, the monthly payments for leasing the 2004 Linear wagon would be higher than the lease payments for a 2005 Arc wagon. (I got the Arc.)
