Road trip report----and my poor bike

Seattle to Snowbird, Utah---1700+ miles rt. As usual, I didn't see another 9-5 the whole time (are they really all in Rhode Island?) Drove the whole way back in one day: 840 miles, 13 hours, felt fine. That's a testimonial to how great the seats are--no fatigue, no back pain, nada. The interesting part is that I discovered on the way down that putting bikes on top makes a much bigger difference in mileage that I thought. First day, with the bike on the roof, I averaged 26.6 mph for the day, which included 3 mountain passes and a stiff headwind through the Yakima Valley. Second day, with no bike on top (see below), and a re-set SID, I was averaging 32.3 until the last climb up to a plateau between Utah and Idaho. At the end of the day, after climbing up to 8400 feet at Snowbird, the SID still showed 30.3. Speed was the same both days---80 to 85 mph.
About the bike---they say everyone does this once. I forgot it was up there, and drove under the roof exiting my motel. Ouch. The good news is, the car is fine; not even a scratch. The fork mounts held (I've seen loose forks put a major dent in a BMW roof), and the bike seat and fork crumpled. Fortunately both are easily replaced. My Cannondale dealer says he has one customer who's done this twice; once in a Jetta that ended up with the roof peeled back like a sardine can. So I think I got off pretty easy.
Love the car more than ever!
