I know that everyone here loves their SAABs, but there is a performance drop off when it gets erally hot and humid! I moved to Houston last summer from Michigan and notice a considerable difference in my wife's 2000 9-5 (lpt) automatic. When we were driving down here we got 31 mpg from Michigan through Kentucky, but ended with a trip average of "27.x."
For example, on Labor Day it was 100 degrees F down here and very humid. We had a full car (3 humans, 2 german shepherds) and the 9-5 was really taxed around town. The difference in summer/winter perforamance in my SAABs is very apparent, whereas my 2.0 VW Golf is equally slow in any climate. Both this car and my 2002 9-3 are a lot spunkier when its 50 in January than when it's 100 in July. (I really do think that the humidity is a culprit, which explains how my opinion differs from the Arizona drivers who commented earlier).
