Guess what I saw today!(Long)

Phoenix is really hot in the summer...a given. But what's really cool is that out in Mesa (a suburb of sorts) is the GM Desert Proving Ground.
I take care of radio transmiitters on South Mt., and the road up there is twisting, turning, and a long hard grade. I often see test vehicles that are masked and full of instrumentation. What I saw this week made my head turn...yes, Saabs being tested in our rough environment.Well, today, the guys from Sweden were coming down, as I was going up, and they pulled out, so being the curious sort that I am, I pulled the 1990 9KT into a fast u-turn and met them in a ramada parking area. They were really friendly and showed me a bit of what they were doing. One vehicle was a Cosmic Blue 9-5 Aero Wagon (250HP) and the other was a "mule". A mule was described as a test vehicle with the 9-5 body, but "work-in progress" stuff underneath...in other words a development car. These guys were doing fuel studies today and are headed up to Pikes Peak tomorrow for altitude testing. Lots of computers and instrumentation in both vehicles.
The coolest thing about the 9-5 wagon was the brushed aluminum dash, the new grill design and the Cosmic Blue body. Apparently, the workers in Trolhatten are back from holiday, and starting 2002 production.
Cheers,
Eric
