>"Repair parts aren't more expensive than vw or honda."

This guy has obviously never owned a VW. Saab parts are WAY more expensive than a VW (or a Honda for that matter, since you won't have to buy any parts). Seriously, I'm in law school, and a Saab truly isn't for a person on a limited budget with lots of other more important stuff to worry about than car repairs. I have an '85 SPG and have had to put a lot of time and money into it to keep it in a good state of drivability/reliability. I love the car, but it is costly and time consuming. Compared to other cars the parts cost much more (and are harder to get, "we'll have to order that..."), repairs are more complex (you often need special knowledge obtained from years of participating on this board!), they have strange/costly things go wrong that you never have to worry about with another car (when was the last time you had to have your inner drivers replaced on your VW for $600), and they are DURABLE, but not necessarily reliable. Saabs are horrible cars if not maintained meticulously, and if you have been shopping for used cars, you know that meticulously maintained cars are few and far between.

Honestly, if you are going back to school, buy 1) a toyota, 2) a honda, 3) a Nissan or 4) maybe an old Jetta. I also own an '85 Jetta, and although it is a basic economy car, it drives well, is really well built and super cheap and easy to fix. Everyone else in my family owns toyotas and I'm telling you, they are unbelievably well built, durable and reliable.

Buy a Japanese car and save your money for women, the Saab in the driveway won't keep you warm at night!

'85 SPG 210K - yes I'll buy another Saab, but only because its an addiction
'85 Jetta diesel - 44mpg, who can argue with that.
