Transmissions from a 91 (I think) had the strongest pinions and were generally better. Also, try to find one from a non turbo car if previous to 86 - usually less abused - less "peak" stress under accelerations. Also check for too much play in the diff (a little is normal) and the smell of the fluid - if it smells raunchy that's good, if you small burning and/or the oil is black that is bad. If you see chunks of metal..well you know.
