is not the kind of OG900 Saab owner you'd want to buy a used Saab from.
She came home from college for Thanksgiving and mom said I had
to take a look at her car. I asked my sister what was not working
right and had to really draw the information out of her. It was not
shifting quickly (automatic) or reliably, and sometimes, the RPMs
would go all the way up for a moment (while driving) without the car
accelerating. Going from drive to reverse would take several seconds
before the gear would kick in. Going back into drive, it took about 10
seconds before the car would start forward. I figured she'd ruined it.
She claimed she'd check the transmissions fluid. Probably she was confusing
it with the power steering or engine oil.
I checked her transmission fluid, and the dipstick was bone-dry except for
one tiny teardrop at the bottom. I checked my Bentley book and it said to
warm the car up before checking the transmission fluid, so I gave the
car the benefit of the doubt and took it for a spin. When I got back,
I checked it again, and it was no better. I found a quart of ATF in the
garage, so I dumped it in. Still not much better. I went to town in my
Viggen and got 3 quarts. I figured perhaps another quart in hers, one for
the one I took from the garage, and one for spare. I ended up putting
all of them in, for a total of 4 quarts of ATF !!! The dipstick says
"just right" now.
It changes gears quickly now and reliably. I hotrodded it up and down the
road, and the switch between gears was much better!
This is the same car which had some engine noise last year and I was asked
to check it out. Needed 3 1/2 qt of oil (holds 4). A close call with death
of her car. She learned to check her oil more frequently as a result.
It's still going strongs. It amazes me how much someone can abuse their
Saab and it still works. While I was at it, I noticed the oil sender wire
was broken off, and the dash oil pressure light didn't light, must be a
blown bulb AND broken sender wire....
If your Automatic is having slugishness changing gears and lack of smooth
shifting, do check your fluid, and add or change it if needed!
