84 turbo woes, need advice

Hello all, I have not visited this neck of the woods in some time.
The car in question is a 84 turbo four door, with approx. 145K miles, peeling paint, sagged drivers seat, and a big ol' dent in between the passenger side doors. Alex was driving home from Vermont to New York, and the transmission gave out on him in the exact middle of the journey, in Albany. The report from a local mechanic is that the right driveshaft went through the transmission housing. Having never seen the man face-to-face, we are not sure how much to trust him, but the report seems reasonable. We are novices at the intricacies of caring for a Saab however. This guy in albany happens to know someone with an 85 transmission, he wants $1100. Is that a fair price? Also worth mentioning is that I was reduced to having Firestone/Mastercare repair the right front axle last year, and if that part is responsible for the death of the trans, perhaps that would fall under the repair warranty? I would have to take a look at it (the warranty). We are leaning towards the unfortunate conclusion that it is not worth it to fix the car, A much more reliable car could be bought for around the price to fix the saab. The car is not in fantatsic shape and is costly to own. We think our best bet would be to part it out, or sell to someone who parts out saabs, or someone who would want to fix it. It has a lot of good parts in it and runs decent, pretty well actually.
Well that's the situation in a nutshell, if anyone has any suggestions we would greatly appreciate them, and we can go into more detail if need be.
Thanks to anyone who can toss some help our way,
Max and Alex
