sure it could go at any time just like any part on any car (especially after 100,000 miles) but they are damn reliable--especially with water-cooling. I would not stay away over turbo concerns unless there is a detectable problem.
I don't know much about SAAB automatics so I won't comment specifically on the automatic transmission except to say that much like the manuals I imagine that it could develop problems next week or it could go 200,000 plus miles without a problem. Most cars (SAAB or not) seem to need automatic transmission work by the time they hit the 130,000 to 170,000 mile mark. Just make sure it doesn't have a detectable problem currently (unless you get an appropriate cost allowance) and don't be to upset if you have to do something some time down the road.
I have an 85 900T 5-speed with 177,000 that has the original transmission (and original turbo) on the other hand I have a 1991 with a 5-speed manual transmission that was rebuild at 81,000 miles (EARLY 1991 5-speeds had a flaw but I am unaware of any specific issue with 1991 automatics).
As with any used car have a good mechanic (unconnected with the purchase source) check it out. A pre-purchase vehicle inspection will cost about $60 to $100 and is worth every penny.
Price I don't really know. Is this private party or dealer? I am guessing (wildly) but $7,800 sounds high. I would have thought about $6900 or less but that is just a gut instinct number--I haven't been doing any pricing lately.
