Michael,
My 87 900T convertble uto trans started acting up at arount 150,000 Kms. On colder mornings, for the first minutes or so an a couple of hundred meters of travel, the transmission would appear to 'slip'. After it warmed up, it was OK. I also had a fluid leak from the auto Transmission cooling thermostat. I changed the fluid (just what was in the pan) a couple of times. The fluid level went up and down, sometimes too little, sometimes too much. I continued to drive it until 'low 2' gear went on me. I would have to race the car in first until I travelled a kilometer or so before it would lurch into drive. Finally, 'low 1' went. Now I only have Drive and Reverse. Try getting out of an underground garage from a dead stop with no low gears. Its like putting manual gearbox in 4th to start out. I have finally found a donor car (83 900) with a recently rebuilt 5-speed to put in my 87. You'll hear a lot of people on this board lament the auto transmission...listen to them. I also have a 98 900TC with a 5-speed. The difference is unbelievable. I wouldn't waste a dime fixing an auto tranny. Maybe get a minor service to try and prolong it...I wish I did.
