HELP! A-arm swap nightmare...

I need some help with my poor wrecked '84 900. It was hit in the driver's side, right at the wheel. The suspension took the blow. Right now, I'm just trying to get it to roll, which it won't do with crumpled-under wheel. Can't even put it on a tow dolly. I took the wheel & shock off and tried to take out the upper A-(control?) arm, but ran into trouble.
The Haynes repair manual (rrrr!) says the ENGINE must be removed to get out the A-arm. Anybody know any shortcuts to this procedure??? Right now I've nearly given up hope for the car; it's sitting on three wheel and a wooden chock in my driveway and I'm driving something else (less superior).
My question is: Do I HAVE to take out the engine to replace the a-arm(s) on the driver's side??? Tom Townsend, any way around taking out the engine???
I truly appreciate this BB and any help y'all can throw my way.
