measured at the battery terminal. The battery itself puts out 12.8V. I thought these numbers seemed high and would indicate a bad voltage regulator. The SAAB mechanic I spoke to thought it might be a bad diode inside the alternator. I would think a short would drain the battery, not "overcharge" it (aside from boiling out the battery water, I get a strong sulfide smell like rotten eggs).
On your suggestion I looked at the main cables, but the insulation on these all seems pretty good (almost like new, in fact). If it really is a short somewhere it is beyond my ability to explore, I think.
I appreciate your help.
