I let the battery cool down, then opened the covers with a long stick so that I did not get sprayed with acid (although it had cooled enough that that was not a problem). Added the water (about 1.5 liters worth!) then closed them up and drove to the SAAB dealer. The mechanic there said it could be either the voltage regulator or a diode inside the alternator. At that point I decided not to just buy the regulator - I had had enough. I took it to my nearby indie and let him fix it (he thinks it is simply the regulator too).
Thanks for your input. It seems very unusual to me too!
