My dad and I rebuilt one in our first 900, a '79 5 dr Turbo. We had to go to the local GM dealer to use a special tool to pull or place something deep in the rack that really didn't look feasible any other way. It worked OK for a while. The issue with the morning sickness is due to wear in the aluminum housing at the contact points with various seals. This was supposedly remedied with a softer elastomer in later racks. But new seals won't heal a worn housing. Most (all??) rebuliders put a steel sleeve in the bore to restore it. Your best bet is a good rebuilt rack with a good warranty. My friend's shop isn't keen on Mavall at all (a.k.a. Mayfail. They currently use JAKS (spelling?). They still get the occasional warranty job but the rebuilder stands behind the product.
