OK...simple answer is corroded door lock cylinder. Not unusual, especially if you're able to unlock the door from the inside. I like to fix this one because if the passenger door freezes or locks up getting in the hatch is irritating. I've had to use the passenger door to get in the car on occasion in ski country because the driver's lock iced up and I can't imagine how you've put up with using the passenger door for a whole year!
BTW, the hatch lock mechanism is itself prone to corrosion/salt interaction...a kind of corrosion/garp collects on the aluminum bits and even though the lock cylinder may work, the mechanism locks up....doesn't hurt to spray some lube (not WD40) on the mechanism from the inside..have to remove the vinyl panel on the hatch.
Door fix is remove the door handle plastic part on the inside, remove the fabric insert, and get to the lock linkage. Disconnect the linkage from the door lock cylinder, remove the locking tab that holds the cylinder in the door, and extract the lock assembly.
You can try to free up the lock assembly or get a new one from the dealer and have it keyed to your key code/ignition key.
