From your description of the problem I would say it is a worn inner joint. This is a common failure point on the Classic 900. The right side inner joint is the usual culprit. It is rare for the inner driver/joint boots to fail. Even though the boots look in tact the drivers can be worn. The exhaust pipe passes closely to the passenger side inner driver. Over time the grease breaks down from the heat. Then the driver becomes "cupped" due to lack of grease and a vibration develops.
Have someone check the inner drivers by using this method. Start by supporting the upper A-arms of the front suspension with spacers (The Bentley or Haynes books will show a photo of where to insert the spacers). This unloads the spring pressure from the front suspension. Then jack up the car. Grab hold of the axle shafts and try to move them radially. There should be very little movement. If the movement is excessive then the inner driver is worn.
