Exactly what Leonard said. The alternator needs a few RPMs to get going, then it starts producing current. The light on means the battery is supplying current, not the alternator. Once the alternator comes on line, the revs can drop some and it's fine.
Just give the throttle a little blip and the light will go out. Yes, the brushes on your alternator might be getting a little tired, but it sounds like you've got plenty of time before they need replacement. A very easy job on the 900.
I wouldn't worry that you don't have a high idle. Fuel injected cars have idle control loops, so they don't need to idle as high as an engine with a carb.
