Headgasket Replacement.. ..long Posted by Rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rob) on Tue, 5 Dec 2000 03:25:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
..just tuned the '89 SPG the other night, looking for my warm start troubles. So after freezing my feet off for a few hours standing in the ice covered driveway I started it up, I could smell antifreeze. No, NOT antifreeze! 'I DON'T want a blown head gasket!' ..was my first reaction.
Looking around, I kept seeing bits of liquid 'spitting' out from below the the valve cover area and then vaporizing on contact from the heat of the exhaust manifold. I thought to myself, 'yea, that's antifreeze, hopefully I don't have a blown head gasket... maybe it will just stop...' as it DID seem to be tapering off. The car seemed to be running smoothly and I really didn't want to face the reality that I had a blown head gasket. I needed THIS car to get to the airport.
I looked real close at the seam between the exhaust manifold and the head: LOTS of bubbles bubbling. I didn't see any bubbles on the outside seam between the head and the block? Hmmm... Maybe an internal leak... maybe I don't have a blown head gasket!
The car soon sputtered out and died, like it has so many other times this past month trying to diagnose the warm start problems when I had time. So I thought, this was the opertune time to check the oil for any signs of antifreeze. I mean, the car had only idled there in my driveway for 3 or 4 minutes, I shouldn't see anything in the oil but the nice fresh oil it has in it. Wishful thinking on my part.
The dipstick revealed the HUGE amounts of bubbley foamy crap all up and down the dipstick... CRAP! That was a big slam to the face. Just looking at all the junk I've got to remove just to get the head off. Geez, the price we pay for technology. I've been there and done that with so many other Saabs. But those Saabs were the SIMPLE ones, the V4's, the strokers. Ahh, the good ole simple saab days. Too bad the bodys have rusted away or I'd be driving those now!
But this is the mighty 16 valve turbo! Muscle, Gusto Brawny Beefy.. uhh, well.. for a 2 liter 4 cylinder that is ..but it comes with a price... more sensors to check = more headaches...
Ok, anybody been in this position... simple quick shortcuts to get this done? Maybe retork the head for a little more life, or would that really be cost effective. Lucky for me I have backup transportation but I DO like this economical lowriding beefy bus of a Saab!
