Well, it might be a little late for you, Rob, but to anyone else contemplating this, I hear there's a special socket you can buy for removing an O2 sensor. It has a slot in it for the wire to come through.
As I said with my own personal O2 sensor ordeal, I ended up taking off the exhaust elbow. Then I crunched the old O2 sensor in my bench vise, put the handle of a garden weasel into the exhaust pipe, and used the six feet of handle leverage to twist the pipe loose from the sensor! (And that was after a lot of soaking with penetrants, etc.) It was a real "B" to get off.
Supposedly, they're much easier to remove when the pipe is hot. Different coefficients of expansion, probably. That's why you can struggle with the thing for hours, give up in exasperation, drive to a Saab mechanic, and as soon as you get there, he puts a wrench on it and it comes loose for him with little effort, making you scratch your head in wonder. As for me, I don't like getting burned, so I tend to work on cold parts when I can. (See my old post on replacing my wastegate actuator!)
