Replacing steering column - any tips?

I plan to replace what I - incorrectly? - call the lower part of the steering column.
What I mean is the part of the steering-column from above the powersteering rack pinion and connecting to the metal-rod onto which the steering wheel itself is screwed/fixed. This part has 2 universal joints, one of which extends out of the fire-wall in front of the drivers side.
I plan to do this in attempt to cure an annoying high speed instability problem, that has been with the car since I acquired it 1½ year ago, in spite of a number of undertakings (Rear bushings checked, tyres replaced, ball-joints all checked and found in perfect condition, tie-rod ends ditto, wheel alignment set right, front and rear shocks replaced with new, lower A-arms bushing nuts tightened max). By now, steering wheel play is considerered a likely cause of the dangerous driving property of my SAAB 900i (5-door, 8-valve, 1990).
I would like to know, whether this undertaking is to be considered piece of cake, or is it more tricky than this. Also, will this part just drop out of the firewall once the lower and upper universal joint pinch bolts have been removed, or are there more to it than this???
Thanks for any input.
Mike M
