Driver's side door hinge problem

I'm affraid I may have damaged the hinge on my driver's side door. It was a really windy night when I was getting out my car and a strong gust of wind flung my door open and let out a popping sound. The door was stuck open. I had to use moderate strength to get it to move again. I was affraid it wouldn't be able to close properly but fortunately it was. Now when I open it passed the halfway point (where it would stay open by itself) it lets out a loud "pop" sound. It's the same upon closing. Does anyone have any idea what might have broken? I'm planning on removing the door for a closer inspection this weekend. How do you seperate the cables going to the door from the body? I don't want to have to cut wires and splice them. I've also been haveing to put up with louder than normal cabin noise from the wind while in a highway. Thank in advanc for any help you offer.
