Jags of the past 10 years have had above-average to excellent reliability
due to Ford-influenced improvements. Jaguars of the 70's and 80's have
mixed reliability (like some of our Saabs it seems) due to British
Leyland's bad influence or Jaguar's poor finances. My 69 E-type is very
reliable. Perhaps thats because the owner before me seemed like a
no-expense-spared sort of owner.
Jaguar has used a variety of transmissions. 60's Jags used moss synchro
and non-synchro 4-speed manuals. 70's and 80's sedans used BW automatics
which were adequate, but not loved. The XJS coupe had a GM Turbo350 (or
400?) Recently, they have been using ZF transmissions, and on
supercharged vehicles they are using mercedes transmissions. All
automatic of course, but with the J-gate for optionally selecting gears
without a clutch.
Saabs are FWD, and Jags are RWD, so that will cause the transmissions
to differ beyond comparison too.
