In the immortal words of Bill Clinton, it depends on the definition of 'safe.'
Use of ANY carwash IMHO can scratch the finish, brushless, no touch, go figure. I used to use them 10 years ago (and of course there are those who will argue the state-of-the-art has improved, yada yada yada) and all it got me was a car with most of the dirt cleaned off BUT slight scratch marks in the paint that accumulated with time AND recycled wash water driven into the nooks and crannies of the undercarriage.
Even the hand-held pressure wand in the do it yourself carwashes use recycled water in these days of EPA mandates....so I'm not sure that is a good deal but perhaps it's better than leaving crusty cakes of salt on the car.
Usually there is one day or more a week when temps are above freezing in which I can hand wash my car using the hose. Of course if you live in Maine or Canada you may have far less, but it's still unusual to go for more than a couple weeks with below freezing high temps....
